About Zoara Health
Zoara Health is developing a preventive health platform that combines continuous biometric data, EHR-integrated clinical context, and clinically governed multi-agent AI to deliver personalized prevention and wellness programs for providers, payors, and individuals. Our goal is to shift care upstream from reactive disease management to proactive, predictive, and participatory health.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Medical Director leads the clinical strategy, quality, safety, and development of our preventive and personalized health platform. You will serve as a credible external medical voice, bring current expertise in wellness and precision health, and work hands-on with product, design, and engineering to build and continuously improve the platform.
Success requires demonstrated speaking and presentation skills; sound judgment about emerging clinical evidence; and a record of translating patient and provider needs into useful products. You will explain Zoara’s clinical approach and value to prospective clinic partners, physicians, investors, and other audiences, while shaping rules-based and AI-enabled features from discovery through testing, launch, and ongoing iteration.
Decision Authority
Own clinical standards, evidence thresholds, protocols, safety guardrails, and clinical acceptance criteria. Provide clinical approval before new or materially changed recommendations, protocols, or features are piloted or released. The Medical Director may withhold clinical approval and require suspension or rollback of unsafe functionality; unresolved clinical safety concerns must be addressed before release or reinstatement.
Set clinical product priorities with product leadership and recommend roadmap trade-offs to the CEO. The CEO retains authority over company strategy, budgets, resourcing, and overall release timing, subject to clinical approval and applicable compliance requirements. Escalate unresolved cross-functional decisions to the CEO while retaining accountability for clinical judgment and safety.
Clinical Philosophy and Personalization
We seek a physician who champions proactive, predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory care. At Zoara, this means using longitudinal data and responsible AI to improve healthspan, function, and quality of life while preserving clinical judgment and accountability.
In practice, you will:
• Advocate earlier, evidence-based intervention to improve health trajectories
• Use wearable, sensor, and EHR data to inform individualized care
• Balance innovation with evidence, avoiding unsupported longevity claims, unnecessary testing, and technology without clinical value
• Ensure AI supports shared decision-making, patient agency, informed consent, and the therapeutic relationship
Key Responsibilities
External Clinical Leadership and Communication
• Serve as a leading medical voice with prospective clinic partners, physicians, investors, payors, clinical opinion leaders, and other external audiences. Explain our clinical approach, evidence, intended use, and value clearly and credibly, with appropriate limits on claims.
• Lead clinical presentations, partner discussions, demonstrations, publications, conferences, and educational content; develop clear written materials and respond thoughtfully to clinical questions and objections while protecting clinical independence.
• Support clinic partner recruitment and onboarding, communicate pilot findings and limitations, and bring external clinical insights into product and program decisions.
Preventive Programs and Evidence Evaluation
• Own clinical standards, protocols, and playbooks, from evidence review through launch and continuous improvement. Maintain current expertise in preventive, lifestyle, functional/integrative, and precision medicine, applying scientific rigor.
• Evaluate emerging protocols, diagnostics, biomarkers, and personalized interventions for evidence quality, clinical utility, safety, and relevance. Explicitly classify what is ready to adopt, what warrants further evaluation, and what is not sufficiently supported.
• Design comprehensive prevention programs covering age, history, and risk-appropriate screening, early detection, immunizations, family history, and lifestyle-based risk reduction.
• Lead cardiometabolic prevention.
• Integrate mental well-being, sleep, substance use, functional capacity, and life-stage needs, with appropriate assessment and referral pathways.
• Define multidisciplinary care delivery, supervision, escalation, training, and competency standards for clinicians, care managers, dietitians, and health coaches.
• Establish risk-stratification and testing policies requiring defensible clinical utility for biomarkers, genomic panels, and continuous monitors, with clear handling of false positives, incidental findings, overdiagnosis, and downstream burden.
Hands On Clinical Product Development and Personalization
• Own clinical product priorities, requirements, and acceptance criteria in partnership with product leadership.
• Work directly with product, design, and engineering throughout development, testing, launch, and ongoing iteration. Shape user experience, care journeys, and understandable, actionable recommendations grounded in member goals, clinical context, preferences, affordability, and access.
• Define and validate rules-based logic and AI-enabled features using continuous biometric and EHR data. Specify agent behavior, conversational design, escalation pathways, and safeguards for sleep, metabolic health, stress, recovery, activity, and nutrition.
• Participate in prototype and build reviews, clinical testing, user acceptance testing, and release readiness.
AI Clinical Governance and Safety
• Establish human oversight, defining decisions reserved for clinicians, mandatory review, escalation thresholds, documentation, and accountability.
• Distinguish routine behavioral prompts from risks requiring clinical intervention or primary care provider notification.
• Own safeguards for unsafe handoffs, conflicting recommendations, unreliable or missing data, subgroup disparities, excessive alerts, model drift, and clinically inaccurate AI outputs, with authority to suspend or roll back unsafe functionality.
• Chair or co-chair cross-functional clinical governance forums; review and approve the clinical aspects of significant changes to rules-based and AI-enabled workflows.
Data Interoperability and Clinical Informatics
• Define and oversee clinical requirements and acceptance criteria for standards-based data mapping and EHR integration, including FHIR, HL7, SNOMED CT, and LOINC.
• Design practical care-manager and primary care workflows with clear ownership of abnormal results, referrals, escalations, and care-plan follow-through.
• Work with scientific and clinical advisors to interpret agent and integrated-system performance.
Behavioral Science and Engagement
• Apply evidence-based behavior-change approaches, including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral principles, with appropriate referral to human coaching or clinical care.
• Ensure understandable consent, meaningful member control over data use and participation, and accessible, equitable program design.
Regulatory Quality and Compliance
• Maintain working knowledge of relevant U.S. telehealth, scope-of-practice, FDA, and HIPAA frameworks, including their application to AI-enabled tools, CDS, and continuous sensor data
• Define boundaries between wellness support and diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, and urgent triage, with clear clinical authority and escalation ownership
• Partner with product, engineering, and compliance on validation, risk assessment, monitoring, and appropriate limits on agent autonomy
Required Qualifications
• MD or DO, completion of an ACGME-accredited residency, and board certification in a relevant specialty, such as internal medicine, family medicine, preventive medicine, cardiology, or endocrinology
• Active, unrestricted U.S. medical license and eligibility for additional state licenses as clinical duties require
• +7 yrs. of post-residency practice, with demonstrated leadership in preventive medicine, lifestyle medicine, virtual care, remote monitoring, or digital health.
• Demonstrated speaking and presentation skills, supported by examples of credible communication with physicians, clinic partners, investors, or comparable external audiences; ability to explain clinical evidence, uncertainty, and product value clearly
• Current engagement in preventive, lifestyle, functional/integrative, and precision medicine, including sleep, metabolic health, nutrition, exercise, and stress. Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate emerging protocols, diagnostics, and biomarkers and distinguish adoption-ready approaches from those lacking sufficient support
• Demonstrated contribution to a digital health product development, launch, and iteration.
• Ability to define, test, and improve clinical logic, safeguards, and evaluation metrics for rules-based and AI-enabled features, and translate pilot feedback and outcomes into product decisions
• Working knowledge of health data infrastructure, including HL7, FHIR, and clinical decision support.
• Sound clinical judgment, demonstrated through evidence-based decisions
Preferred Qualifications
• Clinical Informatics subspecialty certification, advanced clinical or biomedical informatics training, or equivalent leadership experience
• Lifestyle Medicine certification through the ABLM or equivalent expertise
• Experience developing, evaluating, or clinically deploying LLM / agentic AI
• Experience with payors, quality measures, or risk-bearing arrangements
